Who can participate in Spectrum Quest sessions?
Our programs are designed for young people aged 10 through young adulthood who face social challenges, including those with anxiety, autism, or low self-confidence. Any young person seeking fun and community engagement can benefit from our sessions.
Are Spectrum Quest game sessions held online or in-person?
Spectrum Quest game sessions are held exclusively in-person or face-to-face, offering a unique and enriching experience that online sessions simply cannot replicate. For young people on the spectrum, in-person interactions provide invaluable opportunities to practice real-world social skills in a supportive and structured environment. These sessions encourage face-to-face communication, allowing participants to pick up on non-verbal cues like body language and facial expressions, which are often challenging to interpret online. Additionally, the immersive nature of in-person gaming fosters a stronger sense of connection, teamwork, and belonging, all of which contribute to positive outcomes. The tactile and immediate engagement of these sessions also helps participants stay focused, reducing the distractions often associated with virtual environments. Through in-person play, Spectrum Quest creates a safe, encouraging space for personal growth, friendship, and fun.
When and where are the sessions held?
Sessions are currently conducted weekly during school terms on Mondays and Wednesdays in Coburg North and Box Hill. If these days and locations are not convenient, please let us know if you’re interested in a group in your local area, especially if you can help find players. The application form will always have the most up to date information session times.
How are the groups structured?
Our quest groups are curated based on suitability, age and capability to ensure the best fit for each participant. Sessions are capped at 4–6 participants per quest to provide an inclusive and impactful experience. Most quests run for a single school term, while players may trial for one or two sessions; players are encouraged after their first session to participate and commit to every session for that term.
What are the costs involved?
Costs depend on the age group and session length and are shown on our home page. Participants must provide their own pencil and eraser, as well as any note taking material they wish. A standard set of polyhedral dice is recommended, but not required. Other material will be provided. Session costs are NDIS claimable/fundable as our sessions are focused on improving relationships and social skills, our Game Masters are trained, and the games are classed as “Capacity Building”.
What are Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TT-RPGs)?
In TT-RPGs, participants use their imagination and creativity to design unique fictional characters, while the Game Master (who runs the game) describes the world these characters inhabit. The Game Master presents challenges for the players to face as their characters and sets quests for them to achieve together. A story develops as participants decide their characters’ actions in response to the Game Master’s scenarios. If a task is difficult, dice are rolled to determine the outcome, which the Game Master then narrates. These games help build imagination, social skills, teamwork, empathy, and storytelling abilities.

Spectrum Quest has established several policies to create a safe and supportive environment, including a Code of Conduct, Child Safety Policy and Procedures, and Fees and Payments Policies and Procedures. By participating in any Spectrum Quest activity, individuals agree to adhere to these principles.
